Department of State Health Services

The Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Tobacco Prevention and Control Program announces the expected availability of FY 2008 tobacco funds to provide city and county health departments and independent school districts with grants to convene or support an existing community coalition to provide community-planned, evidence-based environmental tobacco prevention and control activities. Funds are targeted for conducting in-depth needs assessment regarding community tobacco use and tobacco-related health consequences among young people and adults; building capacity to address these needs; and planning, implementing and evaluating evidence-based programs, policies and practices designed to address tobacco use among adults and young people. Coalitions will be funded to implement a public health approach to comprehensive tobacco prevention and control activities. COPS Secure Our Schools Grants

The COPS Office is pleased to announce the availability of funding under the COPS Secure Our Schools (SOS) 2008 grant program. Approximately $13 million is available in FY2008 to provide funding to law enforcement agencies to assist with the development of school safety resources and provide improved security at schools and on school grounds. This program will fund up to 50% of the total cost to implement one or more of the following options: placement and use of metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures; security assessments; security training of personnel and students; coordination with local law enforcement; and/or any other measure that may provide a significant improvement in security.

This year, the program is open to all law enforcement agencies nationwide. The application process will be competitive, and as such it is recommended that interested law enforcement agencies use this time, early in the solicitation period, to contact and develop partnerships with area schools that need to enhance or improve school safety and security equipment and/or measures.

To be considered for funding, completed applications must be submitted on-line or postmarked no later than June 13, 2008. There are three ways to apply for the SOS 2008 grant program. 1) You may obtain a copy of the application materials by calling the COPS Response Center at 1.800.421.6770. 2) You may print the application materials from a writeable PDF file that is available for download from the link below. Emergency Management for Higher Education Grant Program

Emergency Management for Higher Education (EMHE) grant program (CFDA #84.184T) is designed to fund higher education institution projects to develop, or review and improve, and fully integrate, campus-based all-hazards emergency management planning efforts within the framework of the four phases of emergency management [Prevention-Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery].

Applications for this competition are due on May 27, 2008. It is anticipated that 18 awards under this grant program will be made in FY 2008 and award announcements will be made no later than September 30, 2008.

DHS Announces Release of Application Guidance for Over $3 Billion in Grant Programs

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on February 1, 2008, the release of application guidance for 14 federal grant programs whose collective purpose is to strengthen prevention, protection, response and recovery capabilities at all levels of government. Infrastructure Protection Program applications are due to the department no later than March 17, 2008, and Homeland Security Grant Program applications are due May 1, 2008.

The Ralph and Eileen Swett Foundation

Description: The foundation's mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals by making grants to other charitable organizations’ funding programs. The foundation takes an active role in seeking out these programs by inviting organizations to apply, but also depends on organizations to bring themselves to the attention of the foundation board.

Applicable Programs: The Woven Word, Second Step, and Talking About Touching programs.

Eligibility: IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

Award Amount: Varies; in recent years, $10,000 to $100,000.

Deadline: Applications accepted all months; however, complete applications, including all supplementary materials, must be received by the Foundation no later than two months before the grant approval/funding meeting dates of April, September, and December to be considered at that meeting.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation Youth and Education Grants

Description: The goal of youth and education programming is to support healthy infant, child, and youth development by mobilizing, strengthening, and aligning systems that affect children's learning.

Screening and Brief Alcohol Interventions in Underage and Youth Populations

Description: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholisim (NIAA) is calling for grant applications on screening and brief interventions to prevent and/or reduce alcohol use and its adverse consequences.
